When we heard about the story of Anne, a college student who used machine learning to discover two new exoplanets, we knew we had to help sharing it further.
Anne taught herself the tools to write an algorithm that rummaged through huge amounts of data collected by NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope, contributing to groundbreaking work towards the future of astronomy and AI.
We captured interviews and footage with Anne on location in her native Texas, at the University of Austin and deep in the Chihuahuan Desert at the McDonald Observatory.
To bring the story to life, we used a mixture of live action and animation. Make the story more accessible and inspiring by illustrating the elements of the story that can’t be filmed: deep space, complex machine learning algorithms and the way Anne feels through her story.
Alongside the film we also launched a tutorial on how to use Tensorflow to get started with planet hunting, authored by Anne, it gives the most curious parts of our audience all the information and tools they needed to go and hunt for planets themselves.
